Actually, a charging system should be about 13.8 volts at idle. You are correct though, 12 volts at idle seems low. Are these rebuilt? Like the cheapie brand from Autozone or something?
I have a 96 Taurus, currently at 142K miles and I am on my fourth alternator. The bearings went on the original, # 2 was diagnosed bad at a shop(I have my doubts, I think it may have just been the tensioner) and my lights would dim on # 3 at highway speeds. This time I installed a new one, not rebuilt.
