Friend (not a car guy!) had a similar noise many years ago on a Datsun. I pulled the front calipers only to find the pads completely gone and the metal backing the pads are on almost worn thru to the caliper piston. Rotor was, well, "severely worn". I had never seen brakes that worn out.
