My a/c stopped working this weekend and I wasn't able to get hold of a mechanic. I kept driving on it than Saturday night when i started my car I heard an awful metal on metal noise. There were sparks coming from the a/c compressor clutch assembly. After further examining my car in the daylight it looks like the clutch assembly is bent up/blown apart. I was hoping someone could tell me what could have caused this(did my compressor seize up and take the pulley with it?). Also is it safe to drive to the mechanic? I can post pics if need be.

This same thing happened to me a few months ago. The clutch plate was slamming against the wheel well and making an awful clanking sound. When the second bolt fell out, the clutch assembly fell and landed on the ledge below, where it stayed for a few days before I could replace the compressor. No damage was caused by this. You may get away with just replacing the clutch, but while you're down there, you may as well do the compressor too.
