My son has lost first gear in the transmission. He is only able to get around the neighborhood and we are trying to determine whether is is worth getting fixed?

It has 125K in miles and estimates for rebuilt are anywhere 800 to 1000 dollars.

If you have any feedback or suggestions I would appreciate it.

Thanks, B

Rebuild a AX4N for 1000$?? It cost me 2300$ five years ago!
They might talk only about replacing a relay in the valve body...
Check the "Transmission Range Sensor/Neutral Safety Switch" before shelling the cash - you can get one for 20-40$ from the junkyard and replace it yourself.

Just replaced the AX4N in wife 99 sable last month with a FORD unit,
cost me $1956 100,000 mile warranty no risk core. Core dep. was $600
These are completely stripped down and rebuilt like a new transmission
including reman torque converter and are shipped with mercon fluid filled.

Car has 131K on it when the trans started to leak slowly at first.

I did the swap myself and saved big money, I did the ball joints and
replaced the oil pan gasket during the swap.
