I checked out grammaz 1998 Ford Taurus with the 3.0 Vulcan. I saw water leaking out of the weap hole of the water pump so I assume the water pump is bad. Also the fans don't work when the car is on or when I turn the a/c switch on.

I know for a fact that this car has been rigged up here and there and I really don't want to mess with this car but she wants it running and I decided to tackle it myself.

Well my concern is after I replace the water pump will it still leak like I've been reading about here in the forums, timing chain cover I think it was. Where/how would I get info on how the fans operate? I got out my test light and checked the fans with the engine running. Good ground just no voltage for them to operate. I tried and hot wired each fan straight to the battery and they worked but is this a good way to test if they are bad or not?? Having experience with this car in the past, I remember the fans turning on when you turned the key to on.

Any tips/considerations/advice is greaty appreciated. Thanks.

The fans are controlled by a 2 step temp sensor. The coolant/block has to get hot enough to turn them on...

on a 98+, they got rid or the CCRM and went to discreet relays. I think they are by the battery. The high and low speed relays are controlled by the PCM. Assuming the wiring is OK, the relays are not fried, and the relay fuses are not blown open, the computer is not signaling the relays to turn on the fans. If you disconnect the dual wire coolant sensors (for testing) the fans should run non stop. Your going to need a DVM and find out where you have power and where you don't.

Ok, so I got the water pump changed out. Got the fans working. Now there still is a leak.. but more of a drip............drip................ drip leak. Before it was just a steady stream from the water pump weap hole. Seems to be dripping by the oil pan towards the back side of the engine by the firewall. I couldn't quite locate where it was coming from but it drips onto the exhaust and then down where the oil plug is. Oh man this doesn't sound too good. What could it be? This car is old, not taken care of so I'm guessing it could be anything

Check and see if it's coming out of the AC core condensate drain hole, kinda below where your heater core lines go into the firewall. Leaking heater cores will sometimes drain out there, if not into the cabin on the passenger side floor...

I'll bet $50 on a bad timing cover gasket. :lol2:

Check your heater core bypass hoses and hardware carefully. Mine was leaking at the molded t fitting on the passenger side. The long metal cross pipe has a habit or rusting and leaking also. Get the car hot, turn it off and inspect all the hoses and fittings on the bypass CAREFULLY.
