I've inherited a 97 Bull that has is on its 3rd high schooler, about 100k miles.

It has been going through a rough patch the past month or so.

The driver said the RPMs have been reading right below 1k while driving.

A couple days ago, she started the car, the tach jumped to between 2-3k, then below 1k, then shut off.

After that, the engine started, RPM dropped, then shut off again.

After that, crank no start.

She abandoned the car to go hang out with friends and I couldn't get hold of her to get the keys to do any quick diag. work. So I had her drop the keys off and had it towed to my regular shop.

They put the key in the ignition and it started up immediately, and they couldn't find the problem. They said the only code it was throwing was for a transmission solenoid.

A little background, the car does have a coolant leak. I couldn't pinpoint it exactly in the 10 minutes I had to work on a wiring problem, but it appears to be in the vicinity of the timing cover. edit: the car has received little to no maintenance in the past year and a half.

Trying to get pointed in the right direction. Went through a lot of threads and none seem to match exactly.

It sounded like a failing fuel pump at first. If it is still going, I would put a pressure gauge on the manifold to see if it is low.

Mechanic still hasn't looked at it, it's just sitting in his parking lot.

Just giving a heads up, NOT abandoning this thread...

So, the mechanic said it's likely an intermittent fuel pump problem, was unable to replicate the problem himself, but trusts the observations of my daughter.

He said he doesn't want to do any repairs on it, though, because of the transmission solenoid code. He said throwing money into a fuel pump is a bad idea when it most likely will need transmission repair soon.

That money would be better spent toward another car.

Kinda figured it would end this way, honestly.
