I've been wrestling with this problem for weeks now that this car will run as good as you want it to for 4-5 miles or until it warms up and then; no pickup and generally bad. I mentioned in a previous post that I'm thinking that I might have timing problems and will attempt to reinstall the distributor thinking that I might be off a cog on the gear. I proceded to take the cap off and discovered that the center contact on the rotor is gone and a portion of the plastic is melted off. Thinking that this might have happened today, July 5, 2010, so I put it back in and the car starts and runs, I'm amazed. Of course, I'm going to replace this, but before I do, can someone tell me why this happened and do I have to correct anything before I put the new one in.
