92 Sable 3.8 Engine Bad

1090 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  93taurusSX
this engine at 122k is dead! the lower end has gone out meaning the bearings are bad and the head gaskets are history, so i am thinkin rebuild?? local companies want $2700!!! if i take out the engine and take it to them it would cost 1300. i found i can get a new crate motor for about 1300 too!!

does anyone else have any suggestions for me? what should i do?? anyway of finding an engine cheaper that is new or rebuilt? i know that 89-95 the 3.8's are the same so getting one from a junkyard is gonna be hard to do since it will be very old and probably high mileage.

If you can take the engine out yourself do you think you could tear it down and check and replace bearings ect.??
Bearings and a full gasket set would only be a few hundred if you did it yourself.
For $2700 you could find yourself another decent Taurus/Sable.

But they're asking too much IMO. I'd try getting another estimate.

where can i get a set of bearings? can it be done from underneath the car so i dont have to take the engine out? i checked the oil and there is some thick chunky s*** iin it so something is grinding in there, whether it is bearings or something else. i also think the headgaskets are bad, it was drinkin coolant yet it wasnt leakin on to the ground, would have to put in about a gallon per month.

whre can i get these parts and how do i know it is bearings?

i am thinkin of just selling the car as a parts car and just let someone else deal w/it. any offers?

its actually a nice sable LS w/power factory sunroof. 122k
I personally would do the rebuild provided every thing is done, like bores checked crank turned valves replaced, everything milled or replaced. Otherwise do the crate motor. How long has the tranny been in? If its original it will soon be out. Something to consider.
to be honest i really dont think im gonna mess w/it. dont have the time or desire. i think i would rather just put that money into my GTP.

thanks guys for your help and let me know if anyone may beinterested in buying this from me for their own project, i thought about getting a SHO engine and tranny and rebuilding it then puttin it in but o well.

again let me know if anyone wnts it for cheap
For around that same amount of money you can get one of the Jasper rebuilt engines (highly touted as the best rebuilders of the 3.8).
