Hello, just joined the forum. I am hearing metallic rattling noise from the exhaust. A muffler shop diagnosed parts of the cat conv are breaking off and depositing in the pipe around the resonator. When I shake the pipe I hear metal stuff inside. No engine lights on, and the car runs very well it's just annoying. I can deal with it I just want to be sure no real damage is being done. Is this a major job? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Well, if the cat is breaking up, then it should be replaced. I think on those older ones, there was not downstream O2 sensor to monitor catalyst efficiency, so you shouldn't get a check engine light. However, you won't pass an e-test if you need one. It's not a really major job to replace it, and it won't really cause any more damage with the possible exception of the broken pieces plugging up the exhaust and choking the engine. You'll know if this happens cuz it'll run like a bag of crap.
