From what I can tell, there seems to be no difference between the 3rd and 4th gen starters, yet they are not considered interchangeable. What's up with that?

Reason why I ask is I saw a pretty new starter motor on a JY 98 Sable and I'm needing to replace a bad one on an 03 Taurus. Isn't it the same 3.0L SFI Vulcan V6 engine between generations more or less? So why are there different model starters according to Napa and other sources?

Only thing I can figure is the number of teeth on the flexplate was changed between generations causing them not to be interchangeable.

Yep, I answered my own question. The 3rd gen 98-99 starter has 10 teeth, while the 2000-2005 4th gen has 12 teeth. Stupid as heck if you ask me. They changed the flex plates so they had to change the starter.
