My wife has a 2004 Sable and all was well with the shifter till this morning. She went to Dunkin Donuts and after she came out the shifter on the column was moving very freely, but was not moving the trany out of PARK.

After I got back into town I found that it would shift manually by hand from underneath the hood and got it home.

I also found that once it was shifted into reverse or Drive that the shifter on the column will shift it back "UPwards" from drive into nuetral, reverse, then park. The shifter just won't shift "Downward" from park.

Is there an adjustment that is out of whack or ????
Any help or insight will be appreciated.

That's because the metal rod inside the car is pushing against the metal connected to the trans, pushing it away back into P. Since it can't pull the metal, that would be why :) That black covering is essentially a casing, or a slide tube.

Time for a new cable! Should be able to use a cable from any column mounted shifter from 2000 on. They are $100+ at the dealer.

(PS CW, one post is enough, somebody will post a response sooner or later. There is no "staff", it's you and me.)
