I have a 2002 taurus sel that needs the whole sunroof replaced. Do I have to remove the headliner? If so, how do I go about that? How do I remove the interior light fixtures?

I replaced the glass on 03 with a JY glass. No issue getting the glass out the top. Nothing to do with the headliner. Larger issue is to not drop a screw as it ill hide in the track.
PIc of my holding screws hex or phillips with masking tape.

Was there a plastic about an inch with the glass. I think mine is connected to the rail system and the plastic is broken.
Do you know how to remove the interior lights? I got the covers off but I don't see any screws to get the fixture itself loose
Why does the moonroof need replacement? These rarely fail. You do not have to remove the headliner. Remove the black plastic surround and the glass and then remove glass. Remove all the retaining screws. Remove access panel in rear and remove the motor. You’ll find two more screws under the motor. Remove all the screws holding the moonroof assembly to the tray (accessed when glass is removed) and the entire thing will slide out.

The glass got shattered and there is like a hard plastic about an inch thick that is about the same size as the sunroof (under the glass but goes around perimeter of glass) is also broken. So I thought I would have to replace the whole thing. Maybe I am wrong. When you say black plastic surround do you mean the seal, or maybe it is the black plastic that is broken on mine. My glass has 6 screws that attach it to the sunroof assembly. I was hoping I could just replace the glass part itself but I think the broken piece is attached to the assembly
You just need that black plastic that attaches to the glass and the glass itself. The black plastic is attached to the drain channel that pulls itself up to catch water from the rear facing end of the glass. No need for entire moonroof replacement. With glass out, that piece should be easily replaced.

Oh my gosh, you are a lifesaver. You saved me a lot of work, and headaches, and cussing. Thank you so much for responding. Easy as pie. Do you know by any chance if the glass could possibly need adjusted? It sorta looks like it is sitting a little low when closed. Just afraid it may leak. Thanks a million.

Yeah when the glass is tightened down, you have range. Loosen those bolts back up a bit, push up in desired location, tighten. Should be good to go.
