I have a 2001 Ford Taurus SE with the 3.0 is 149,000 miles. This morning (it was raining pretty good), I was driving to work, and the engine started missing badly. The Check engine light was flashing. I took it to the parts store and hooked up the scanner. The code came back as "Cylinder 1 misfire". I bought a new set of plugs and wires, and replaced them tonight. The engine is still misfiring.

I thought about replacing the coil pack, but hate to just start throwing $ at it. For the most part, the engine misses all of the time. It did snap out of it sporadically for short periods of time.

Anyone have any ideas how to proceed? Thanks.

Crack in the bottom of the coil pack. Also run it in the dark and look for spark jumping from bad wires.

Yep...the coil pack was the problem. I replaced the plugs, wires, and coil pack and all is now fine. I read somewhere that if the coil is bad, the engine will miss on 2 cylinders and not just 1. That wasn't the case here...it was missing on cylinder 1 only. Thanks for your help!
