Just because you hear the pump does not mean it is not the pump or fuel system that is causing your problem. Based on your symptoms, specifically the sporadic nature of the problem and tendency to happen after the car has been left sitting, the fuel pump is most likely the issue if your battery/cranking voltage is good. It could also be an issue with the fuel pressure regulator (which for '01 is a mechanical unit in the trunk) or the fuel filter bypass valve (also a '01 only feature). You need to check the fuel pressure to eliminate fueling as the cause of your problems. It should at least 45 psi but not greater than 65 psi with the key on, engine off.

Good call.
Added a pic of the one year only filter. I would only use Motorcraft as the fuel pressure is set there. Comes with a bracket. I did not use that. Poped the old one out of it's bracket and the bolt was really rusted in. Put the new filter in the old bracket and put a hose clamp around it.

If you do a filter, put the hair pins in the lines before slipping them on the nipples. Pointer goes "points away" from the filter. Thus the hairpin has a bevel that lets it ratchet on the nipple over the bulge and stay put. Real pain to put the hairpin on after the line is on the nipple, especially a 3-holer.

Best of luck.

Sounds like my grass cutter when it is running out of gas. The only problems I have had with fuel pumps out of five Taurus were 2001s. They use the weird internal pressure recirculation in the fuel tank. Both had pump failures at around 100k miles with random no starts then starts after waiting an hour or so.
