Help with Part Number - 2000 Wagaon AX4S VSS

Hello,

I'm trying to find a VSS for my 2000 Vulcan Wagon with the AX4S.

Will this one from Advance Auto Parts work ?

It doesn't look anything like the VSS shown in the video here on the forum because it has a cable attached and no gear shaft built into it.

Advance Auto Parts: Sensor - Vehicle Speed by BWD - Part SN7195

The description says it's for an AX4N .. but the part looks the same as what I have on my AX4S.

It seems that the VSS for my Taurus is in high demand and very hard to find around these parts.

I'm in Florida and NAPA said the closest one available was in Los Angeles.

My local Ford dealer said the VSS has been on back order for a month.

Thanks!

Hard to tell if it will fit or not from the pic. Pull the old one out and take it with you to advance and comare the 2 (assuming you have another car available to get you there).

Yeah, that's what I'm planning to do as soon as time permits.

The funny thing is, the VSS for the AX4N that I've seen in the 'how to' video here on the forum doesn't look anything like the one that's supposed to fit the AX4S.

Thanks Jeff.

It does look like the one from a 2000 AX4S. I did not take a picture of it when I had it out, so I can only go by memory. Here's a pic of where it's mounted on the top of tranny.
That's the one I've got.

For what I've read and seen about the 4N, it looks like the 4S is much easier to replace.

Advance obviously screwed up the part description shown on their website.

Thanks for the photo.

Just to let everyone know, I ordered the VSS from Advance and it works fine. Had to use the bracket from the old one though as the new bracket didn't line up just right with the hole on top of the tranny.

Totally solved the 1-2 shift problem.

Tranny is smooth as silk.

Thanks.

What was involved in replacing the VSS ?
Where is it located ?
What has to be removed to get to it ?

Thanks!

8mm open end wrench will be needed to remove metal cover, circled in red in the photo shown in this thread.
reach down behind the motor from the driver's side with your right hand and follow the cable along the top of the tranny ... the end of that cable is your VSS ... use your 8mm wrench to remove the metal cover ... the VSS pulls straight up and out ... the other end of this cable is an electrical plug which should be in the area just under your brake booster.

pretty simple really.

The VSS looks exactly like what is shown at the Advance Auto link in the first post of this thread. I'd say the entire part is about 10 inches long.
