I have a 2000 Ford Taurus that will not shift into second gear yet drives otherwise okay. I know that transmission work can be very expensive. What are some possible causes of this issue? Thank you!

Does it shift from 1 to 3 or only stays in 1st? How many miles? $2500 for a rebuild with remove and replace. Need more info to even guess other than buying flowers for it.
