I hit the brakes the other day and it felt like the engine jumped (mounts) and right away the power steering was out. The belt was OK and the fluid was full. When I turn the steering wheel, (sitting still), there is something mechanical jumping in the steering mechanism. Like jumping a tooth. I think it might be in the hydraulic rack and pinion unit. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Thank you.

Solved

The rear part of the subframe was rotted and the engine was sitting on top of the power rack and pinion. Junk yard time.
