2003 Taurus 3.0L Vulcan engine with about 85,000 miles ,engine surges while driving. Does Not do it all the time, but lately, it does it more often. While cruising along perhaps 25 mph the car will surge forward for a split second.
I've noticed it faster than about 25 mph (around 40 mph) but you can feel it more going slower.
What could cause this?

Idle air control (IAC) valve would be my first guess.

Is this a common problem with this car/engine?

Is it a 24 valve Duratec or the vulcan? If not sure, look for the name on top of the engine.

could be a torque converter shudder and you just think its coming from the engine

It is the Vulcan engine. (I just edited my original post to include the Vulcan).
I really don't think it is torque converter shudder. I had a TBird that had that. This is different. It is a power surge. The tach needle will twitch up a bit when it does it.

Pull the iac off and clean it with throttle body spray and see if it makes a difference. If its fubared, replace it.
