Cranks but no start

I have a 1999 ford taurus that's been sitting for years. It ran good when parked, but now it won't start. Cranks good with fresh battery and i know it has spark because I checked the front 3 spark plugs and they all spark (it's got the duratec). The fuel pump isn't working but even when i spray starting fluid in the intake it doesn't respond in any way, as if nothing happened. I thought it might be the crankshaft position sensor so i spent the day replacing that, and even now it didn't change anything. It sounds like it has compression, and the starter sounds good, and all that. UGH this car is already a nightmare...

Correct but if that was the only issue then it would fire for a short period of time or at least attempt to start when I sprayed starting fluid down the intake. It makes no difference when I do, so there is another issue other than the fuel pump.

Maybe on a carburetor engine, not sure about a fuel injection engine? Do you hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key to on position?

I hear nothing. I also checked at the Schroeder valve in the engine bay after "priming" it a few times and no gas came out. I've seen people run modern fuel injected cars off of starting fluid in the intake hose, so i'd assume this would at least ignite once to prove it is working, but the fluid makes no difference in cranking.

I have got some response on starter fluid on my Taurus but it was always give it a spray for a few second and put the snorkel back on, they turn the key.

Pull the oil cap off, and look in the hole, with the duratec engine, you should be able to see the timing chain, if you do see the timing chain, have someone turn the engine over while looking in the hole. You should see the timing chain spin. No spin means bigger problems. if you do see spin, then spraying the starting fluid in the intake should net a short start out of the engine.

Are you opening the throttle blade when spaying the starting fluid in?

I’ve tried spraying it in a bunch of different combinations, throttle plate opened, closed, In the front three spark plug holes (small amounts) and I took off the intake and sprayed some down all 6 holes there too. Nothing. I’ll check the timing chain today when I drop by where it’s parked at.

I checked and I see no timing chain. I had my brother spin over the engine and I see the cam spinning but I don’t see the chain anywhere.

The cam is spinning, but you dont see a timing chain (scratches head)...

You have the ability to take a pic in the oil cap looking down at where the timing chain is supposed to be?

EDIT: Ok thats right, I forgot on earlier models the oil cap is more over the cylinder head, vs later models where its over the timing chain.

So seeing the cam turning is a good thing.

I would recheck spark on all front 3 plugs, and not only checking for spark, but the color of the spark. You want to see a nice bright blue spark.
