Won't start after overheating.

Hey guys,
I have a 2000 ford Taurus 3.0 DOHC that recently overheated. I was on the road going 60 when I noticed a burning smell shortly after my temp went up but never reached H I managed to pull over to the closest exit and just as I pulled into a gas station the car shut off.

I popped open the hood and realized there was no coolant in the reservoir! I knew my car had a small coolant leak but i had just filled it up the night before. I waited until it cooled down and then put some water in the coolant tank. However the car would not start.

I can hear the starter but it does not sound like it is turning over. what could be preventing it from starting? I want to at least get it running to see if the head gasket needs to be replaced or at least to flush the radiator. Please any input would be greatly appreciated.

Not turning over? Damn. Hopefully the motorist seized. I would start by looking for what was causing the burning smell.

What kind of engine noise and performance issues did you experience before the gas station engine shut down?

Thanks for responding and Sorry I did not realize turning over was the same as cranking, it does crank meaning it does make a starting sound when i turn the key. The burning smell seems to come from the intake manifold

It will not start however, it happened to today and it has been sitting for over 5 hours Im wondering if i should let it sit longer before i try again or if anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them

thanks

I definitely heard a clunking like sound and the performance was weak. I would accelerate and the car had no power. it began smoking and turned off just as i pulled into the station

thanks for the reply by the way

It may have blown one or two head gaskets. Cause no coolant would definitely do that

Have you checked out any sites about engine overheating and the major mechanical failures that happen because of it?

It doesn't have to start, you could get a compression tester, the front 3 cylinders would be easy access, the rear wouldn't. Then all it needs to be able to do is turn over.

My DOHC overheated to the same point because of a water pump failure (and loss of coolant due to over flowing from expansion tank). No gaskets where burned.

However, your initial defect/situation might be different.
