2006 Taurus Transmission Cooler Install

I finally got my transmission cooler installation completed on my 2006. I used a Derale 13225 Cooler that I purchased from Amazon. This cooler is long and narrow and I selected it to utilize the location where the stock combination cooler or just the powersteering cooler is on my car. This location looked to have good air flow when going down the road and with the fans. I also wanted to use hard line for part of the run and not have a whole bunch of hose running around and this one uses -6an fittings. A couple of simple L brackets with thread cutting screws attach it to the cross bar behind the bumper.

The cooler is spliced into the bottom line where it connects to the transaxle. I picked up extra hose at the JY so I could save my original one. I cut off the crimp fitting, bent the tube and soldered on a compression ferrule to create a hose barb. I picked up some coated steel 3/8 brake line from Napa and created the hard lines to run from the transmission cooler to the back side of the radiator. (I have the proper flare tool for AN fittings which are different then a regular plumbing flare.)

I double clamped the connections with a factor spring clamp and a factory screw clamp for the sake of being the exact same as it was factor. The one short section of hose could be eliminated by connecting those two metal lines with a compression connector or a flare connnector. I debated that but decided to go with a hose to allow some movement and it lets me go right back to stock if I wanted to for some reason. ON the metal lines I made I again soldered on a ferule to create a hose barb. I picked up some Gates 3/8 Transmission Cooler hose from Car Quest, it took about 2 feet.

I have also been monitoring my transmission temps by installing a Type K thermocouple probe in the port on the transmission using a 1/8 NPT to 1/8 compression adapter.

That's beautiful work Tom!! nice touch on the bug screen wrapped cooler also... let us know on those temps your car puts out on most driving situations!! when I get mine installed,, Its not gonna look that good.... so prolly no pics... lol

I typically hang a piece of regular screen in front of the condensor to keep down on it getting filling up with bugs in the summer and sand from the roads in the winter. I have some pre-cooler temps that I want to post up.

Nice installation work!!!! You could have made a barbed fitting with the first stage on a double flare tool but the ferrule is a brilliant idea.

The winter temps are what I would like to know before and after. A bypass valve would be a neat feature to limit the temp drop in the winter. Is the cooler in series before or after the radiator trans cooler.

I do not have a double flaring tool. I would love to have one of those hydraulic ones that forms a variety of flare or barbs. Maybe someday.

I have the cooler in series with the radiator cooler mounted after the radiator cooler.

I could check the temps in winter easy enough. I would think just covering the cooler would work for the experiment but with this layout I could delete the cooler just removing one quick connect and changing one hose connection.

Here are the pre-cooler installation temps I documented to try and get a baseline to how the cooler works. All of these are from a mostly highway drive home from work in rush hour traffic so some stop and go. The final temp was as I arrived home after a short drive off the highway into my neighbor hood. I recorded length the drive and the outside air temperature.

25 min drive 67 degree day 160 final trans temp

40 min drive 75 degree day 164 final trans temp

35 min drive 68 degree day 167 final trans temp

35 min drive 70 degree day 171 final trans temp

45 min drive 79 degree day 189 final trans temp

50 min drive 90 degree day 200 final trans temp


212 and 214 were the max temps I saw on the hottest day for a short time climbing a grade.

The 30 plus minute drive in hot weather seems to be enough to get to the point where the temp has stabilized to the condition.

Interesting temperatures, I figured the temps would never be below the radiator temperature. Covering the cooler in the winter would be a good idea for a test but also to maintain trans temp. Please post numbers this winter because winter temps are my main concern.
