Hello,
I need a new starter for my 2004 Taurus Vulcan. Should I go for a re-manufactured form a brand name BOSCH or MOTORCRAFT or a aftermarket, new and for some reason cheaper despite being new.
Gear reduction starters came on the market in early 1960's. Done for smaller size, lighter, and use less power to do the same work. Chrysler products were the first in US for gear starters, Alternators, and electric ignition. Perm magnets came a bit later.
I never had a starter go bad on any of my cars except my 1975 Firebird which the pinion gear shattered. That's 45 years of driving. Those years you could pick up a pinion gear at the parts store. Replaced that and it lasted the ilfe of the car. Never had a starter fail in my Taurus and four of them had over 200k miles on them.
I have been using these as well and am on the third Autozone starter on my 2001. Admittedly one was ruined when the oil change place didn't sufficiently tighten the oil filter one time, but the warranty works every time and I only paid for the first one 15 years ago.
^^^^^ I prefer to buy quality parts in the first place and be done with it. From my point of view, a lifetime guarantee doesnt mean much to me when the part fails out in the middle of nowhere 1000 miles from home.
