Welcome to the 71 code nightmare from hell.

I have spent literally $1,000 trying to fix this same issue and have done everything.

Before you drive yourself into the poor house and/or insane asylum, try replacing the DPFE sensor.

It is behind the engine on the right side as you look at the motor. Remove the two bolts holding the throttle body on and disconnect the air intake from the filter housing and move it out of the way to get to it.

Two hoses, an electrical connection, and two 9 mm nuts holt it in place on the DOHC SES engine.

Sensor is available at Amazon for $20.00 or Autozone for $84.00.

That would be my one concern and his codes indicate classic vacuum leaks. However if the hose attached to the sensor was not tight or was falling apart- what code would be set? Would he get the 0171 and 0174 along with 0401 and 0402?

Have you also checked your fuel injectors- that could definitely cause a lean condition.

^ The dpfe hoses aren't vacuum hoses. They're heat resistant silicone sampling hoses coming off the exhaust manifold ports.

Please read the above as posted by a FORD dealer.

A faulty DPFE will throw the 0171 code.

A faulty EGR will throw the 0401 code.

All I'm saying is....check this FIRST. It's only 20.00 as opposed to thousands and tons of time.
