Advice for transmission fluid change

I need to change my transmission fluid in my 1998 mercury sable OHV I was just wondering if there’s anything I should know before I do it. Anything helps.

May do a search top right of this page. Also check forum topic finder and wiki under the "Tools" bar up top.

Grab a Sterilite clear under-the-bed storage container/tub from Wallyworld large enough for the atf pan to fit inside. Also at Walmart, 6-8qts. of Supertech Mercon V atf for a pan drop drain/fill, a couple rolls of Scott blue paper shop towels and 2 cans of brake cleaner. Get your filter kit at Rockauto online or a local parts store. Clean/reuse the pan gasket if it's the reusable metal reinforced rubber one. Might as well grab a turkey baster at Walmart also to drain your ps reservoir and refill with any leftover Mercon V atf. 2 birds with 1 stone, lol! I remove the pan with a 3/8" dr. ratchet and an 8mm (5/16") socket and replace it using a smaller 1/4" dr. ratchet.
