2004 Mercury Sable random misfire

I have a 2004 Sable. The other day my car started shaking a lot and the check engine light started flashing. Took it to autozone they said I had a misfire on 6. I switched the coils on 6 and 4 and took it back, the misfire was now on 4. Bought a new coil and replaced the coil on 4. Ran ok for a few miles, then the same problem happened again. Took it back to autozone, now the misfire is still on 4 (the brand new coil). Now the check engine light is steady on and it's running worse than ever. Did they sell me a bad coil? Why else would the misfire haved moved?

Got the code read. p0304, cylinder 4 misfire. I'm guessing it's the new coil, too. But isn't there a seperate code for a bad coil?

No. The computer can not determine if the coil is the culprit in most cases.

When it comes to anything electrical like coils, sensors, etc. I always try to not get it from autozone. They don't have a good reputation. I recommend motorcraft brand for stuff like that

Yeah, I just happen to live really close to an Autozone. I'm going to at least try and return the coil since I don't see any reason the new coil would go out when it's in a different cylinder (4) attached to a different wire and plug than the first one that went out (6).

^+1. Motorcraft or Borg-Warner (BWD) coils are recommended. BWD available at Advance Auto or O'Reilly. May check/replace spark plug(s) also. Motorcraft or NGK.

I should have been more clear, sorry. When I pulled up to Autozone the CEL was not currently flashing or solid. Got it checked, came back 304. When I started the car, the CEL was solid. Are you saying this is probably a whole new code?

When changing a part or fixing something related to a CEL best clear the codes and watch for a new one or not.

Codes self clear but some take a number of cold starts to clear the code and extinguish the light.
