Thumbs down P1740 and the Grandpa Taurus

Hello everyone! My name is Caleb and I have a broke ol' Taurus!

She is a 2004 SEL, Duratec engine with about 175k on the odometer. Sadly, have not done any tranny work on it since I bought it at about 150k. Anyways, down to the nitty gritty.

A day or two ago, on the way back from work, I noticed that in low speed (1-35mph), going from 1-2 and 2-3 I would get a somewhat hard shift and what seemed like a little slippage. It did not seem too hard, but definitley noticeable. Once I got above 25-30mph however the shifts were butter. But slowing back down, coming to a stop it kind of jerks a little and seems offended that I want to slow down. Once I got halfway back home, the check engine light came on. Took it by Autozone and they pulled the P1740 code. Thats where I am now.

I am mechanically inclined, as well as my friend, and we are trying to figure out where to go from here. The fluid is rather hazy, so I am assuming a flush is obvious. We are wanting to test the solenoid its self, but cannot figure out where exactly it is located. I have searched the rest of the forum and cannot seem to find a precise enough answer. Can anyone actually point me to the thread that has the TCC process? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

BTW, no notice of the revs going high, they stay normal on shifts.

P1740 - Torque Converter Clutch Inductive Signature Malfunction

Looks like the solution is to replace the torque convertor clutch (TCC) solenoid.

I had a 98 Taurus that kept throwing the torque converter codes and they would replace the solenoid to no avail. It started burning up transmissions. The dealer replaced.....and this is the God honest truth....7 rebuilt transmissions under the first replacement's warrantee. All of them burned up. They finally checked the temp of the transmission fluid and found it to be way over spec. The solution to the problem was a new radiator. The transmission fluid cooling core was plugged. I had about 98K on the car at the time.

^ diagnosis fail. After trans #2 they should have done a better job investigating the issue.

Bet that! Ive seen all kinds of bets so far. The only problem with replacing the solenoid for me is having to lower the tranny and mess with the valve body. A lot of very intricate work. Does anyone know of any different?

Valve body removal is no biggie really. Support trans from underneath with a 2x6 on a jack, pop out driver CV axle from trans. Remove trans mount. Remove bolts holding cover on. Remove gasket. Remove 20+ valve body bolts, valve body is off car. Home mechanic could do job on an unsalted car in under 3 hours with hand tools.

Is there an extensive write up for something like that floating around? I have no problem tearing things apart, but my slight hyper-activity keeps me from getting it back together.

Side note: is there anything I can disconnect while driving (ie. fuse) that would help me troubleshoot?

I am not readily aware of any specific writeups. You may want to click on Topic Finder and see if there's anything, as well as searching the forum using the Google Custom Search at the top...if not, I will check on V8SHO.com see if something is there.
