Transmission problem - please help - need suggestions

HI there, I'm a new member. I have a transmission slip problem as well and the transmission specialist (AAA approved) replace the filter and the fluid and the car is going good now. However, he said that there is fluid leakage and significant amount of debries was founded in the plate. He suggested me a rebuilt for a price window between 1800 and 2600. What do you think? It it worth? My car is a 2003 with 85000 miles. I bought in Dec 2009 with 50000 miles.

What are the works I should make sure are included in the rebuilt? They offer 12000/1year warranty.

You should make sure that they actually rebuild it, instead of just swapping in a junkyard unit.

I had to make a similar decision a while back about my '02 w/114,000 miles on it.
The P.S. pump needed attention and I had a coolant leak at the timing cover gasket. The dealer wanted "maybe run you up to $2500 before you're thru". Then he told me to go outside and look at the sticker of the new Taurus sitting out front.
Since I was still not ashamed to be seen in my old one, I went ahead with the repairs.

Depends what kind of driving you do. Do you have AAA? Do you drive outside the towing range normally? If you normally stay in your towing range...keep driving it.

Debris is going to be in the pan if its never been changed. My 2000s was significant when i changed it at 117K. It had only had a pan drop/filter at 75K in its life.

Is the car leaving drip marks on the ground? I would make sure you check the level of fluid and drive it as long as you can. Make sure you check once its fully warmed up. Fluid needs to be about 150F before you can check level.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. Well I do not have triple AAA but I can always get it. I know for sure that there is some leaking and it is not negligible. Keeping the car like that would make me feel always worried whenever I have to drive out of town. That's why I'm trying to understand whether fixing the car is worth or not. Some people say is not worth to fix a car whose tranny gives problem at only 85k miles. They say it is a sign of owing a bad car=american car. Which is probably true. At the same time, new car is much more expensive and require higher registration, higher insurance, etc... :-(

Car are like women.... always a problem :-)

Meh...as long as you pay the right price for it, it's fine. Used car values are up these days, so don't scrap the car.

Ok so you definitely have a leak, wasn't clear originally. That's a start. Considering I see well maintained Gen 3s on dealer lots for 4K with low mileage, and of your vintage 6-8K, I think it'd be worth your time taking a few minutes and finding an ATRA approved transmission shop.

Where do you live? I know of a good shops in Columbia, SC; Boston, MA, Canton, OH, Omaha, NE.

Find a local ATRA Member Transmission Repair Shop

A rinky dink builder giving you a 1 year warranty is pretty crummy IMO if they believe in their product. I would at least want a 18 month/18,000 mile warranty, if not a 2 year/24K mile. With the stipulation you will bring it in after 1 year or 12,000 miles of driving to drop the pan, change filter, inspect the pan and refill with new fluid.

Thanks a lot. I live in Davis, CA (close to Sacramento). I see there is an ATRA shop 13 miles from my place. I got already two quotations:

1) - from an AAA approved specialist: price for a rebuilt between $1800 and $2600 with one year/12000 miles warranty

2) - from AAMCO: they gave me only the worst case price, in case a replacement is needed - 3.5k with three year warranty. DEFINITELY TOO HIGH!!
