'97 Taurus GL 3.0L: Hood Lift Recommendation

I'm talking about the (2) hydraulic lifts that hold the hood up. Mine have been shot for about 4-5 years and I'm tired of using the wooden dowel. Advance has StrongArm ranging from $16-$28 each. AutoZone has MightyLift from $22-$30 and a brand called Sachs for $40 (which O'Reilly's sells for $30).

Any particular brand I should avoid, or are they all Chinese and doomed to prematurely fail anyway? Looks like you have to measure carefully because some of the "universals" don't fit? And it appears that my Ford originals fit over a ball stud on the fender, so I guess I need the "ball socket" style? Some say 'nylon', but that's probably prone to crack, right? I also see some that say "blade" instead. This must be a mounting style that WON'T work with my car?

I've had good luck with the ones from Autozone.

Go to your local yard and get a pair... any gen 3 or gen 4 will work. they just "pop" off. The ball and stud enable them to be easily removed, way cheaper than getting new, that's what I did..found the newest gen 4 I could find, should last a long time..just my 2 cents.

Sheila:

The Mighty Lifts, I assume...

don2775:

Funny thing - I bought a '98 GL sedan for $200 on CraigsList to fix the front end on my '97 two years ago. I ended up stripping that car down to everything but the engine and transmission (tranny was gon and the engine was too big to store). I thought I had my 'new' hood lifts off this car but wouldn't you know it - both were shot just like mine. That Taurus hood is pretty heavy! Maybe they wear the lifts out faster that other hoods might. I think mine lasted about 10 years ... not bad, I guess. By contrast, the ones on my '02 Impala seem like they're going to last forever - they still snap the hood up like new! With the Taurus lifts, it was a slow kill. You could feel them failing for a while before they finally quit.

So gen 4 will fit, too ... Hmmm ... that's 2000 through 2003/2004, I guess ... this site gives this info on the top page, I believe..
