1996 Taurus brake pad job cost?

Hi Folks,

My 96 Taurus is a car which does not get driven that much, maybe 2,500 miles a year and is kept in the garage away from the elements.

Yesterday drove it for the first time in maybe three weeks and it was fine. Took it to the Post Office this morning and the front brakes were making grinding noise, which was not just when I left the garage but after driving it around town.

So I think it needs brake pads. I called one shop they said it would need rotors and be $300 for the total job.

Can't I just get the pads replaced?....as I just heard the sound and haven't been driving around with it sounding like this.

What should this job cost (from Massachusetts).

No way I can do this job myself so please do not suggest that.

If it is metal to metal you need a full nice matched set or you are just throwing money away. How many original miles on the parts?? Sometimes our rides do not time their needs to our ability to pay. The parts for front rotors and pads with my discount are $130 and labor is usually at least $75 a side at most good shops. You should do it right if you can possibly have it done. Go to a good small shop that is always busy. Be safe first!!

The word "grinding" often implies severe wear, possibly a seized caliper.
When a caliper seizes the brake pad can be worn off quickly, then you end up with the backing plate of the brake pad grinding against the rotor which ruins the rotor.

If that DIDN'T happen, and you just need a set of pads that's a very routine job and shouldn't cost more than an hr labor.
Of course a decent set of pads will cost you $30-50.

I've never had a garage tell me I didn't need new rotors when I felt I needed a brake job.......... and they usually say...."Unlike the old days we don't fix the rotors we replace them".

In any case I got another quote for $269, including new rotors, that is better then the over $300 the other guy wanted for the same thing.

I may have misused the word grinding (I don't know).....usually grinding starts out with just a little noise and you don't wait you take it in to be checked......but this time one day the car is fine and the next morning this noise when I push on the brake pedal.....came on fast in other words.

See if you can get a good quote from an independent small shop. The franchise big name places will screw you. $269 installed is not bad, but not a deal either.

I agree....find a small mom and pop type shop if you can, that's where I go. They usually have less overhead and do a better job, because they like repreat customers and word of mouth advertising. you might try asking your friends or relatives.
In fact the place that I go, the owner was at the local pick and pull, and happened to find a vehicle just like mine that someone had just had new pads and rotors installed, he gave me a good deal on the rotors, but still put new pads on of course.

If you go with budget-level rotors and brake pads (something in the class with AutoZone's Valucraft), the retail cost of rotors and brake pads is no more than $100 per axle. The labor time to replace them is like one hour. However, there can be complications such as worn calipers or caliper brackets, in which case, the cost of labor and parts will go up. Oh.. and don't forget to have the shop flush and bleed the brake fluid. I have been told that the cost of fluid flush alone is around $80.

Depending on the type of pad anywhere from about 20-50,also when you get the pads should also see if a shop can turn the rotors for you. That shouldn't be anymore then 10-20 a piece. Although they'd have to be within the specs or shops for legal reasons won't be able to. In that case rotors shouldn't be that bad either. 30 or so each,depending on where. There's a great video on how to change them on youtube
Great info for a first time diy which as one who's done it. It's very easy. One more thing,if you do get new rotors use some brake cleaner on the rotors before you install them. Gets the oil and preservatives off them. And sorry didn't notice the not being able to do it yourself. But do ask about getting the rotors turned instead of replaced. And hopefully this thread might help someone else so I'll leave the rest of the info here.

Don't bother with cutting the rotors. I don't know why, but I've had nothing but problems(warping) with any rotors I've had cut in the last 10 years or so. This did not happen on older cars. Just replace them if needed-they're relatively cheap.
