I try not to let it go under a quarter tank. I used to run it down to E all the time, it was kind of like a game to me. A couple of fuel pumps and $500 down the crapper later I decided it was just easier to put gas in.

I used to have a 91 Cougar and when it got down to about 1/8 a big red light came on that said CHECK GAUGES. Scared the crap out of me the first time it happened. It took me a minute to realize I was just low on gas.
Gotta love those "idiot lights"!

There was an episode of a british car show called Top Gear where the guy tried to see if he could go 800 miles on a single tank of diesel (20 gal). I think it was some Audi. He had something like 50 miles left and the car said 0 miles to E. He made it all the way back to the gas station, in traffic no less.

I told him it was a bad relay from the tank. The relay was the wife.
