At the gas pumps...

Couple of days ago I was nearly out of gas so I went to get $20 of gas. The pump I'm at has a choice of 87-91-93 octane buttons. I was pressing the 87 button and it wouldn't response so I kept jabbing at it and the pump suddenly came on.

I was pumping the gas in my car when I noticed that the 91 button was lit up. Damn, I'm putting in 91 octane so I finished it. Too late to stop. I remember putting in 93 for a performance boost. That turned my Vulcan 3L into a mad Vulcan 5L (LOL).

Because of gas prices I went back to 87 for months. Today I noticed some power in my Vulcan that made a difference. My engine's not so anemic as it has been. Maybe I should stick with 91 octane.

Octane more than required by designed will produce very little noticeable power gains. You may get a little because the PCM will add a little more spark advance if your car would have pre detonation in the cylinder and is being adjusted back through the knock sensor. Probably not noticeable. My 2001 knocks like crazy and doesn't have a knock sensor. Regular gas on a hot day' pings like crazy and I can feel the power loss under load but that is an extreme case.

My ‘00 Vulcan has pinged since new on 87. I don’t know how many times the dealer has flashed the PCM to no avail. I can mix 87 & 91 50/50 and it won’t ping so I tell my wife and kids to just run premium and get gas at Costco or Sam’s where the price difference is 30 cents a gallon vs the $1.00 hosing at all other gas stations.

Born on 10/99 2000 SVG Vulcan 141,000 miles. Tranny rebuilt at 92,000.
