What's the best pre 2004 year to buy? Are there any bad years between 1999-2004 and what should I expect to pay for a Taurus with 80,000 miles on it with a good clean title? Also, what trim level do we all prefer? I don't expect leather or sunroof, but I want good airbags and anti-lock breaks. Are there any things to watch for--for example we sold our Focus and I know that front suspension and thermostat housings are natorious to go bad on these. Thanks and hope to trade my 500 for a cheaper car.

I am thinking of purchasing a 2010 Taurus SEL with just a little over 14,000 miles on it. The dealer is asking around $26,700.00 with tax amounts of a little over $2,000.00 in my area. Does this sound reasonabl? I can get 3.99% interest. On a 2011 Taurus I can get it for I think 1.5% interest and a payment of $440.00 per months. Please help. I am thinking the newer car is the better deal but hubby thinks the used one is the way to go. he payments only vary by $41.00.

I bought a 2003 Sable LS Premium with additional extras like power passenger sear and such, quite clean, on a lot, consigned by private owner, likely an estate, cash only, as is, 80K miles for $5800. It needed a wheel, battery, and second key. Tree fell on it a few weeks later and the insurance co paid fair value of $7600. Bought it back from insurance for $406, no new title needed.

Hope that puts the prices in context. Depends on warrenty compared to "as is".

See pic.

Good Luck.

I have had 8 Taurus/Sables from '87 to this 03. Only my 95 was a bit of a pain and Ford replaced the head gaskets under recall. It did not run quite right, seemed sluggish and not too good mileage compared to my two 92's with the same 3.8L. Finally decided to check timing, even though one should never have to. Need a mirror and place it just right and aim the timing gun at the mirror and have it reflect on the marks, then look into the same mirror and try to see it. It was way slow. The hold down bolt had original paint on it so it had not been adjusted. Set it and it ran much better.

My 01 DOHC has 107K and runs great. No issues except for broken front springs.

What I do whenever I try to look for second hand cars is that I always check every single detail that I can. Plus I test drive it.

Any Gen4 can be found with low miles at a reasonable price now. I just picked up a 2004.

Just don't put any diesel fuel or additives into your Taurus.

Chart's Prices

Example of prices.
Pic attached shows three in order of price from same location.

I was watching and bought '02 Lin cont in VA not in rust belt, pristine, 40K one owner, no wrecks, no smoking, proper maint. $8300 asking price.

Point is, good place to find what is out there is online.

I used autotrader.com and cars.com.

Prices are all over the map, and do not reflect the value of the car.

Happy shopping.
