High mount brake light very dim

Good afternoon all,

I apologize if there is currently a thread on this issue. I've searched and didn't come back with anything specific to this. Anyways, on my '13 Taurus Limited, the high mount brake light works, but barely. When the pedal is depressed the two side brake lights shine bright, but the 3rd light is so dim it isn't visible during the day. Any idea what could cause this to work but just be very dim? Fuse or relay maybe? Thank you!

Depending on mileage I'd say take it in under warranty. There are a lot of different possibilities.

56,000 miles (I drive a lot for work) so out of warranty. The dealership can't get me in until the 3rd, and I'd like to avoid a repair & report. I'm definitely not an electronics expert, but I'll look and see if I can test the ground like Sheila has stated.

Worth checking. Wiggle some wires and see what happens.

I'm just curious if this was ever solved? I'm having the exact same issue on my '13 limited. I've checked the two plugs at the back that it uses and wiggled it but doesn't solve anything. What should I be checking next?

Check voltage on the plug. Have someone step on the pedal and see if you have 12_V across the two pins. If you do, identify the ground wire (the black) and test for continuity to a bare metal spot to see if you have good ground. If you do, then the issue lies in the brake light.

The light is LED, and made of a few components on the circuit board in addition to the LED's. I haven't personally inspected one to see what's on it, but usually capacitors go bad and such, and you can simply desolder them and replace them. 2 cent part.

Or if you can't do that, you are stuck replacing the entire board out. I don't have a factor P/N or pricing.

I've replaced or repaired LED third brake lights on a few different cars. Seems to be a common failure. Nice piece of tech, but when it goes bad it's more of a hassle to repair than if there were bulbs.
