Transmission issues

My 2008 Taurus SEL was havings shifting issues after having the input and output speed sensors replace about a year ago. I called shop where work was done and they were backed up and said it sounded like it might need a rebuild to replace shift solenoids. What he did not tell me to do first, granted I should have done without being told, is check the fluid level! It didn't even show on the stick at all. Anyway last night I added two quarts, 16oz at a time and it started shifting much better. I started wondering how it got so low and looked under the car and see lots of what I assume is transmission fluid dripping from below radiator area. Wasn't sure but thought maybe it has a tranny cooler and that's where it coming from. It does in case like me you weren't sure. Might be a combo unit with AC condenser. Googled and found a guy with a freestyle that shows how he bypassed it claiming it was easier and less expensive, which I believe. So just adding this to the thread in case anyone else is having similar issues.

Obviously I need to find out exactly where mine is and I'll post more as I start looking. Good thing is I don't need a rebuild, assuming I didn't run it low too long. And now I know all the spots in my gravel parking area were from the taurus and not my 97 chevy truck as I assumed!

Which engine do you have and how many miles? Have you changed your fluid on a regular schedule? I am asking because my '17 Taurus calls for a 150K trans fluid change which I find excessive. I would like to hear from other owners if they are having problems with this schedule.

3.5 2 wheel drive 4 door SEL Taurus.

I'm trying to remember if I had Jiffy Lube do their flush on this car or not. I didn't think I did. but I'll have to check my records which I don't have on hand at the moment. It did get changed along with filter last year when I had the In/output sensors changed. They were acting up every now and then and causing the car to go into limp mode with wrench light on. That could always be cleared by pulling of the road, turning car off for a bit and turning back on and it would be good to go usually for several days if not weeks or months. It probably had about 120K on it then.

This is one of the better pictures showing the combined ac condenser trans cooler arrangement in the sel. Stolen from justanswer.com! Hopefully I'll get lucky and it's the hoses, but most of the dripping looks like it coming from the bottom of the radiator which is behind the cooler. Humm, since the tranny cooler portion is at the top, maybe I can find the actual leak and seal it with mighty puddy as seen on tv!

Got new cooler installed last night. Not impossibly hard but a lot of little issues along the way. One of the biggest being me stupidly putting the part of the zip ties on to just the cooler before putting on car! Luckily there was a way to release it that I'll show in another post that hopefully no one else will need to do! Other stupid thing I did was start it up and run it a minute or so then thought oh sh!t air filter isn't on! This was all about 11:30 at night, that's my excuse! So once I put filter on tonight I'll start it up and check for leaks. If none, I'll drive it around and see how things are.

Here the stupid thing I did with the zip ties. put the "tee" in the cooler, then the moving slide piece!

Luckily I could see the moving part had like an inner ring that wasn't complete and had a small tool I could use to spread it apart and allow me to pull it back off. And it still worked to attach the cooler to the condenser one I was ready.

Other dumb thing I did was drive car without putting bumper facade back on. I didn't put it on because I wanted to make sure new cooler wasn't leaking, but the front fender liners get blown back and rub in the tires and got worn through! Luckily just to the side of where the lowest screw goes, and when I put it back together the facade seems plenty sturdy and you can't really tell any difference. Meant to take a photo before i put facade back on but didn't. Here a pic of both side once on.

Car still seems like it's having a hard shift or maybe a misfire type stumble. Kind of hard to tell for sure. Only happens like one time in a 15-20 minute drive and then nothing else for a day or two. I'm hoping something didn't happen by driving it low on transmission fluid and that it's just time for a tune up. I'm not getting a check engine light but I'm going to hook up a bluetooth code reader I bought a while back and haven't used much that offers a bit more info than my wired code reader that only displays if there is a code.
