There is no "fuel sensor". The fuel system is 100% mechanical. Pump runs at 100% output when the engine is running. The vacuum referenced mechanical FPR on the fuel rail holds the pressure at a differential pressure of 39 psi across the injectors. Power to fuel pump goes thru the inertia switch. I had an inertia switch go intermittent once causing occasional no start on my 88 Tbird Turbo Coupe, and a friend had the same problem on his 86 Ranger. I diagnosed the problem by running 2 wires from the inertia switch to a small bulb I could see in the cabin. Inertia switch open = light goes on.

Try banging on the bottom of the tank with a mallet while cranking when it doesnt start. If it starts, the pump is failing.
