According to my 1996 Mercury Sable owners manual and the sticker under the hood the recommended oil is SAE 5w-30, API SH or higher. I know that later Ford started using the 5w-20 but it was sometime after 96.

Unless there is a TSB suggesting this use I am suggesting it is an error.

Again, according to my owners manual I found the follow info on engine oil capacity to be incomplete and potentially problematic to Vulcan owners.

The 3.0 L Vulcan engine oil capacity is 4.5 quarts(4.25 l). Not 5.5 quarts. The 3.0 L Duratec engine has a 5.5 quarts(5.2 l) oil capacity.
