Relocating Ashtray Lights in Gen II Taurus/Sable

  1. Remove light housing from ashtray.
  2. Cut wire lead on light leaving enough wire on each side to splice back together.
  3. Using similar guage wire splice in section of wire between original lead and original light housing.
  4. Take out glove compartment. Using tape, mount the housing to the dash support positioned in the middle of the opening on passenger side dash (i.e. Taurus/Sable slatted nameplate).
  5. Using a piece of plastic (a milk jug or sunny delight jug) make a light diffuser. This is important because it will diffuse the light from the bulb across the whole nameplate. Mount this on the backside of the opening for the nameplate with super glue or tape.

The effect will be an aesthetic improvement and if done right, will look like it came from the factory that way. I used a green bulb which i purchased at Autozone. Green matches the stock instrument panel color scheme, but they also have other colors as well.

A Small Change:

If you want something different, try using a strip of LED lights and cut the end off to five or six LEDs. Also, use three sheets of the thick printer paper for a cheap but effective Light Diffuser. Wiring is the same for a small LED Strip, + and -. Wire them the same as you would the ashtray light, and thy should light up. Another perk is because it uses the ashtray light's wires, it can also be controlled by the dimmer switch.

One more thing, this will work with most to any set of LED light strips. (added by Shady_J)

With LED's, the finished project:
