Tools Needed:

3/4" Lug wrench

Needle nose pliers

Flat blade screwdriver

12mm open end wrench

4" C Clamp

Sledge hammer, small Pliers

Drum brake spring tool*

Supplies Needed:

New shoes

High temp silicone lube

Brake cleaner

1. Raise and support vehicle.

2. Disconnect the parking brake cable at the adjuster (12mm open end wrench and pliers). (Trust me, this step makes everything much easier!)

4. Remove and discard lug clips, if equipped.

5. Remove drum. If the drum has excessive wear, a lip may have formed on the inner edge. Use the small sledge to "encourage" it off.

6. Inspect the brake cylinder for leaks or torn boots. Inspect the springs for heat discoloration and replace as needed.

7. Spray the brake assembly with brake cleaner to remove most of the brake dust deposit.

8. Remove the upper spring (brake shoe adjusting screw spring).

9. Remove the brake adjuster lever.

10. Remove the adjuster screw. It helps to completely screw in the screw.

11. Remove the front brake shoe hold down spring.

12. Remove the brake shoe and retracting spring (the large bottom spring). It helps to slide the shoes out of the brake cylinder at the top on the slots at the bottom to remove the spring.

13. Remove the rear brake shoe hold down spring.

14. Pull the cable out about 1/2" with the pliers. Remove the rear brake shoe from the parking brake cable.

15. Remove the parking brake lever clip. It's recommended you discard the clip, but if it's not too banged up, you can reuse it.

16. Remove the parking brake lever from the brake shoe.

17. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

18. Clean all the parts with brake cleaner before installation.

19. Lubricate the adjuster screw, and any place the shoes make contact with the assembly (bottom slots, wheel cylinder piston slots, backing plate) with high temp silicone lube.

20. Reconnect the parking brake adjuster. Adjust as needed.
