I think you're going to get a split consensus on this one.
I have the Scosche kit in my '02 and it's decent; everything works and it doesn't look terribly cheap if you're not looking for something to complain about (and most like nobody but you will be looking to criticize your kit).
Lots of people like the Metra kit better, though.
I did a lot of searching and I think you will generally find the Scosche kit a bit cheaper than the Metra. I will say that if you can't find the Scosche on eBay (and you may not, they're hard to come by for the Gen4 if you don't want to wait for a while), then I would recommend ordering through Crutchfield, just because I don't think you'll find it cheaper than $60 and we know Crutchfield has excellent service. And, if by chance you decide to order a head unit from them, they will only charge $40 for the Scosche kit.

I've had horrible luck with Scosche kits. The one on my focus started going bad in about a year after I installed it. My ex-gf's protege has gone through 3 in about 4 months. The my taurus went through 2 in about 3 weeks. IMO, they look cheap and they're built cheap. Though some other ppl seem to have better luck with them than me.
I dumped the Schosche in my Taurus for a Metra, and I'm still on the first one For the taurus, I think they look better and sturdier than the Schosche.

Could you explain going through 2 in about three weeks? What is happening to them?
I haven't put one in my GenIV but I put one in my GenIII about 6 or 7 months ago and no problems.
Thanks
Mike

IDK that you're going to be able to do anything with the radio unfortunatly. In 2004, Ford put a Passenger AirBag Off Indicator on the opposite side of your defrost button. They still have it in 2005 vehicles. Unless Brad or someone has figured out a way around that, you may potentially cause issues with your passenger airbag.

Thats my dilemma. I have an '05 SE w/the manual climate controls but the wife likes the idea of a working airbag on her side. The nerve! I'm in the process of shopping for an aftermarket speakers/amp set up but will have to go without the aftermarket HU.
Since it looks like if us '04-'05 owners want a functioning passenger side airbag we have to keep the stock HU is there any advantage to wiring up the amp using a line out converter instead of going the line level/speaker level route?
Yeah that should sound better than the speaker level inputs. You can usually get 2 chan or 4 chan LOCs. I dunno if that one comes in 4 channel, if it only comes in 2 you will need to get two of them. You could do it with one and then just get an RCA splitter but you will lose fader capability.

I have decided I am going to a ford dealership on monday and see if i can get a pin out of the wiring harnesses attached to the radio/climate controls panel It does look like the airbag is controled by something in the radio as when i unpluged the harness under the radio controller the airbag light came on when i started it

Does anyone know if it will be possible in the future to use an aftermarket radio in a 05 or is the airbag control module just not emulatiable, I am presuming that it is in the factory headunit because when i unplug that connect the airbag light goes on

I was at a reputable installation business today to get a quote for my system. The owner called someone who he says develops aftermarket adapters and was told about two more months til one would be ready with the airbag sensor connector. I don't know how true that statement is as I heard it second hand but the owner of the shop has always done right by me. Needless to say he wants $220 for just the labor on 4 speakers and an amp. I will be attempting to do it myself (or at least the speakers).

Actually, I have a 2004 model and i have figured a way around the airbag sensor light. In the newer cars they have to run a jumper wire with a resistor to bypass the sensor and give the computer full power. Therefor the computer reads as if the factory unit was still in. I have done much research on this, as i have wanted to install an aftermarket unit in my car. I now have it in and have had no problems with my airbag. Yes the passenger side will still work as the resistor completes the circuit. The dealer has run diagnostics on my car for other unrelated problems and has not come across any coded issues with the new aftermarket radio. If anyone is interested, i can set up a wired resistor and instructions for this. If interested please let me know...

I used a 10k ohm resistor which completed the circuit that would be used with the factory head unit. I used a metra dash kit for a 2000- up taurus. No airbag light to come on except where guages are, however the resistor took care of that problem by completing the circuit. Works great and there is no need to mess with the factory circuit board.

The difference in the two kits is that the metra is more plain looking and the schoshe has a cd pocket added under the radio... Controls are very similar... Both nice kits... Just depends if you want a cd holder or not... Also can only hold one cd in case..
