I realize there are numerous posts about this and I apoligize but I just want to be sure about everything.
Either this weekend or next, I am going to do the tune up and I just want to make a list of everything I have to do with questions. Spark plugs- What is the part number for the best Motorcraft plugs (is it fine wire plugs that are the best)? What kind of dielectric grease should I use on the wire boots? Do I put something on the threads when I put the new ones in? Wires- I figure they should be changed so what wires should I use? Thermostat- Part #? Should I replace it? PCV Valve- Part #? Should I replace it? Should I clean the MAF and IAC and throttle body or leave it alone since it works fine? The coolant and transmission flush will be done at the dealership. I have also had a problem in the past where coolant leaks out of the plastic tank on the side of the radiator when the back of the car is higher than the front parked on an incline. Should I get this fixed or leave it alone? I haven't had any problem since I have been parking on a level surface.

I'm not going to deal with all the '[ quote ]' busiess. See below your questions. I don't have part numbers--call a dealership and ask.
Spark plugs- What is the part number for the best Motorcraft plugs (is it fine wire plugs that are the best)? Don't know. If you are buying from a dealership, they can look for it. If you want to use Motorcraft, OE should be fine unless you have a really good reason otherwise. Autolite double platinums are probably the best aftermarket alternative. What kind of dielectric grease should I use on the wire boots? Any kind. They sell it in little packets for about $1 at most parts stores. "Spark plug grease" or "Dielectric grease." Do I put something on the threads when I put the new ones in? You -can- use anti-seize. If it will be 5 years before you do a swap again, this might not be a bad idea. Wires- I figure they should be changed so what wires should I use? OE. They will cost you, but I have to highly recommend that you pay for them. Thermostat- Part #? Should I replace it? If you're doing coolant, it won't hurt. Preferably OE. I guess that mostly, these either work, or they don't; if you do it now, you avoid having it get stuck 5K after you change the coolant. PCV Valve- Part #? Should I replace it? Yes. Preferably OE. Should I clean the MAF and IAC and throttle body or leave it alone since it works fine? Shouldn't hurt, but use a cleaner that doesn't leave a residue for the MAF. I think brake cleaner is recommended for the MAF. TB cleaner will work on the IAC. Don't know, sorry. If you don't deal with it, you need to keep a diligent eye on your coolant level and temperature guage. |

Which engine do you have. I have the 99 3.0 Vulcan. The plug number from dealership was AWSF32FMF4. Keep it OE. That what I have learned.

I have used Bosch plug wires on my Duratec with success and a Stant thermostat. Both have worked out very well, and will likely save you some money over OEM.

Also, are Motorcraft plugs available at Autozone or just the dealer?

I think Autozone only stocks OE replacement plugs, like Autolite or Bosch. You most likely need to go to the dealer for Motorcraft plugs.

If you are buying a bunch of stuff and you can wait, it might be worthwhile for you to check out some websites too. I've never ordered from any of these places, but I think rockauto.com and genuine-ford-parts.com are supposedly alright. |
