i have an 04 se sedan with a 3.0 ohv vulcan thats been running almost 16,000 on a bad engine ( heavy knocking). but now that i have the money, i wanna replace the engine and id like 24v duratec. are the transmissions for the two different or should my current transmission match up with a duratec too?

Totally different trannys (bell housings.)

Jimmer said it all. You would need a new transmission as well to pair it with the duratec.

Now you could find a 3.0L SHO engine. Same bell housing. But it would require fab work, like mounts, etc.

Wouldn't it need to be a 3.2L SHO engine, since that's the one designed to be paired with an automatic?

it would be better to just buy a Duratec equipped Taurus unless you are really handy as you will need the entire front end to make it happen.

You would need almost a whole front end to make it happen. I know at least 1 person did it and they said it was not worth it due to the work involved.

It is not "made" for the ATX per say, it just has a slight bit more power. Either one would work.

Loudsho - are the trans bolt pattern for the bell housing on the 3.0 and 3.2 sho motor the same?

Yes they are the same. I just bolted an MTX to a 3.2.

Off topic, but since the transmissions are different, does anyone know which one is the stronger one(lasts longer with less problems) Vulcan or Duratec?

Both engines are solid and dependable. That being said, each of them has it's own set of common issues. I have had Taurii with both engines and prefer the Duratec that I have now. I like the extra power and the extra 'growl'.
