Son said his car at highway speeds his rpm starts going up and down on the guage. It has in the past had and issue with not shifting from second to third, I believe on occasion. This trans was rebuilt about two years ago by a well respected shop and seemed good since. I have not personally experienced what he is talking about as it is intermittant. From what he says It sound like the OD is turning on and off. It has the CEL for 171 and 174 but no codes related to the trans. I have a HF scanner and it is possible that it doesn't read all codes. Anyway, my question is "Can the VSS cause these problems?" I have seen in searching the forum that the VSS can cause a lot of strange problems. I thought it would be worth changing and see what happens. I have read where some people have changed it by coming down from the top and doing it by "feel". I reached down as far as I could to check it out and I could only touch the top of the heat shield box around it. Is there any other way to get at it?

Removing the upper and lower cowl will give you somewhat better access to the VSS. Later G3 Tecs are well known for VSS problems.
