Misfire 2002 3.0 Duretec Engine

I have had a misfire problem with my 2002 Duretec Engine for quite some time now. It recently got worse and now its throwing codes, misfire cylinder 1 and misfire within 1000 revs.

The misfire occurs when the engine is cold and when a load is placed on it. Now that it's summer the air conditioner is causing even more misfires. The engine runs fine cruising on the highway. However the engine sputters when accelerating up hill, then runs fine again when the transmissions downshifts.

I had a Ford Ranger that did the same thing and replaced everything from the fuel pump to the coil pack, wires. Still had the same problem. It was fixed by replacing a corroded battery ground wire and a shield wire on the PCM. However I can't find any such problem with my Taurus.

Instead of throwing money at this, I was wondering if this is a common problem with this engine and maybe someone could point me to a specific solution. I've visually inspected everything on this car from plug wires to vacuum leaks and can find nothing wrong.

Also does anyone know of some good windows software for my OBD interface? Something that could load the specs for this engine and tell me what is out of spec.

Check/replace plugs, wires and/or coil pack.

Cracked coil packs on 2002 D'tecs is a pattern failure. Check bottom of coil pack. ANY crack is cause for replacement. Like Sheila says.

Same problem on my 02. Both coil pack and spark plug wire were bad.

Thanks for the replies. Hard to see coil pack. Plugs 1,2 and 3 are buried behind the upper intake manifold. That looks like it's going to be a lot of fun removing Looks like a $100 to change coil pack, wires and plugs. I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

Removing the manifold isn't that difficult. Maybe a half hour if you know what you're doing.

I'm having the same problem with a 2000 'tec. New plugs and still missing.

Try switching the wires between the #1 and #4 cylinder. Make sure you switch it at both ends. If the miss moves, then you know it's the wires. If not, it's either a bad plug or coil.

^ You probably have a bad cop (coil on plug).

That's what I'm thinking. I switched the #3 and #6 coils and seeing if the miss moves. Waiting for the car to throw a light.

^+1. Seems the rear ones go first due to heat back there.

This may not relate to your problem but had the same symptoms w/my '02 Vulcan. Did the easy clean to the MAF and hasn't done it since.
