ok i'm confused here, i have searched but to many different answers , i have a 2001 ford taurus with a messed up 3.0 vulcan engine, it has been ran with water in the oil, so i'm doing a exact engine exchange, i used the vin decoder ,and i came up with 3.0 vulcan engine flex fuel, and my question is were do i look for the 8th didget code of "u" is what the engine decoder gave me, do i look on the engine block itself? or on the dash were my vin is? ebay has several engines to choose from and not to far for me to drive so to save on shipping,i'm just picking it up with my truck.below i have added the questions in numbers

1.were do i look for the 8th didgit code on engine block or dash vin
2.will i need the ecu for the engine i purchase
3.i will be doing only a engine swap as my tranny is rebuilt. is it better to pull enine and tranny or just engine
4.what is the things to look for when doing the engine exchange, any tips to make this go smooth will help, like for example were you have to unplug wires, how will i know which ones go were when i put the new engine in
5.what is the deal with the flex fuel, how will i tell if the engine i'm purchasing came with the flex fuel

thanks in advance guys, i know you will help me on this, and i will be posting pictures and progress as i do this ,and will have some questions from time to time

The 8th digit refers to the eight digit of the VIN located on the dashboard and driver's door. You won't need the ECU if it's swapped out with the same engine. Flex fuel means it can run on E85. Flex fuel engines have upgraded components to handle the increased ethanol. You will need to get a flex-fuel engine.

if your vin goes 1falp52U (8th digit is U) then you have the 3.0l vulcan v6 pushrod motor non-flex fuel (ffv)
