Can I get some advice on how to remove a floor shift cable on an '05 Taurus. I have a rear vent which I believe is is to be removed before I can pull the cable out. (do I need to remove the seats in order to remove the floor ventilation?) My problem is how do you take the cable out from the firewall and reroute the new one into?
Can't give you the specifics, but in general - any cable going through the firewall will use a grommet around the cable that fits into the firewall to keep out drafts, rainwater, etc. Disconnect the cable at both ends, push the grommet (or pull if necessary) out of the firewall and put the new cable in. Reuse the grommet if necessary and possible, unless the new cable has one already on it. Some Ford cables have the grommet properly located and attached already. Silicone lube (NOT spray) or dishwashing liquid straight from the bottle, such as Dawn or Ajax, will make the grommet way easier to coax into place. One more thing - tie some string or wire to the engine-compartment end of the cable you're removing, so you can attach it to the replacement cable and pull it back through the maze of hoses and stuff you'd otherwise have to get a midget's hand down into.
Removing the seat will make removing HVAC floor ductwork way easier to remove. There only should be four hex nuts and two or three electrical connectors at most to disconnect first. Don't be surprised if both front seats have to come out. They're easy, though.
It was gear shift cable I was trying to remove. The cable from the floor shifter to the trans range sensor (neutral safety switch, at most parts stores). I had to remove bothe front seats, pull back carpeting, remove floor vents, pull out grommet from firewall.
After the cable is unbolted from the Trans Range sensor then remove from housing, then popped of the floor shift lever, it was just a simple routing the cable through the firewall.
