Default Question about power steering fluid

The Taurus needed some power steering fluid, so I went to the store to get some. I went there looking to get Valvoline ATF that says recommended for Mercon V applications. I got that, but also noticed a bottle of just plain Valvoline power steering fluid. So I got that too and can take one back later. Which do I use?

Use ATF (MERCON or MERCON V), not power steering fluid.

Ok, thanks. Why would they offer a bottle of regular power steering fluid? Just wondering.

Regular PS fluid was used in older cars, so that's why they still have it. Most cars these days use ATF as PS fluid, but there might be a few new cars that still use traditional PS fluid instead.

I'm confused...you went to get power steering fluid but purchased ATF? What is your vehicle suppose to use?

I think gen 1-2 specified PS fluid, but it's been Mercon ATF since at least 1996. Of course check your owner's manual to be sure.
