Looked at the link in the FAQ Spare Key Programming
Seem like it can be done with the 45 minute method with only one key OR is that ONLY for pre 1998 taurus? I bought two keys online before seeing in multiple posts I need two keys or locksmith? Or do I? If I have to go to go to locksmith so be it, but thought I would ask for advice here first! thanks in advance |

As far as I know you need 2 working keys to program another one, otherwise you would need to go to the dealer to have it programed, not 100% sure though

Don't lose all of the keys - generating a first Ford key without a key code is a royal pain, and the price reflects it.

You have a PATS II system, 2 keys are needed for DIY programming.

You can go to ACO hardware and have them make a CLONE key. They have keys with chips that aren't programmed. The take you original key and clone it on to the new key and then cut it. It worked with my 2002 taurus and I only had 1 original key. The car can't tell the difference between the 2 key cause they are identical. cost about $40 bucks i think. But you still can't buy a cheap key off of ebay and program that key yourself though.

That's a good alternative, I suppose, but keep in mind for that money many locksmiths will program a genuine second key; and, since a clone is seen by the car's computer as identical to the first key you STILL can't program additional keys on your own should you wish to do so.
