Is brake cleaner safe on rubber/plastic? - Taurus Car Club of America : Ford Taurus Forum

Hello all,

Based on the suggestion, I need to clean my power steering pump + reservoir + rubber hoses.

Can I use brake cleaner to do the job?

CRC/Non-chlorinated brake cleaner (05084) | Brake Cleaner | AutoZone.com

Not preffered, but has been done. You will need to immediately clean off any residue, as brake cleaner (non-chlorinated included) will still react with rubber and plastic surfaces. You could also use a concentrated degreaser, such as simple green/greased lightning to do the job with no harmful effects.

It may melt the plastic parts. You'll have to test it on a small area first.

I would use engine degreaser.

+1 on engine degreaser. Try Engine Brite Original and scrub with an old paint brush, rinse off with garden hose.

Hello all,

Just used this product Palmolive Dishwashing Liquid.

Very effective and I think it is safe on plastic and rubber.

Try Dawn dish soap. They use that stuff to clean wildlife after oil spills.
