I was kinda thinking the same thing...anxiously awaiting to see if the cleaning helps. I know this car was FLITHY when we got it, it looked like it was driven around a coal mine for years!

Update. Pulled the instrument cluster today, sprayed the 2 plugs and their contacts on the cluster with CRC QD elec. contact spray (red can). Reseated connections, reinstalled cluster and lo and behold, tach is functioning properly for the time being. If it screws up again, it's off to the salvage yard for another cluster. Entire job took 15-20 mins. Floor shift.

Congrats sheila! Yes those connections to the cluster sometimes go bad. If banging on the dash helps, that's usually the problem. So next time it's behaving badly give it the smack-down.

Cool, I guess next week-end I will pull out the cluster and do some contact cleaning and see if that improves the tach!

Mj, if you haven't pulled the cluster before, there's a great tutorial with pics in the wiki. Click on maintenance, then interior. All 6 brass or zinc screw heads are 7mm. I even removed the clear lens to check the needle(s) which were fine. T-15 torx fit the lens fasteners.
