Default P0443 code

97 taurus duratec 24v, check engine light is on. reads code: P0443 Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit Malfunction. Did the battery disconnect thing, but it comes back after a few miles.

where the heck is the "purge control valve". I've looked in all my docs and can't find it. in one drawing, it said it was under the front left fender, but all I found there was the air intake ducking..... TIA

Sorry, I was hoping the picture would help you recognize it :-)

I thought on the vulcans it was on the firewall passenger side - but that's a guess and you have a tec, hopefully someone will chime in

I did a search and haven't found anything specific that I can point you to. Again, hopefully someone else will chime in.

did stumble on this:
OBD-II Trouble Code: P0443 Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit

On my Tec, it is located on the passenger side fire wall, right next to the strut tower. It has 2 vacuum lines and an electrical connector on it. It is easy to get to if you remove the upper and lower windshield cowl on the passenger side. (Gotta love that Tec engine bay, 10lbs. in a 5lb. box)

Dan, you are absolutly right. I'm 66 and this is my FIRST front wheel drive car. The first thing to fail was the water pump, I had to go to dealer to figure out how to get serpintine belt off. I took me 3 days to finally get it replaced. On a special note------------that's when I found all of you great people here---------------- Then rear brakes. I had to go to Harbor Freight and buy a special kit to compress the pistion (thats after I broke the exixting pistion trying to compress it). Xmas 2009, turbine speed sensor replacement at AMACO ($300). Check engine light P0443. Then TRS sensor___what a simple "NIGHTMARE". I've never seen such a small item cause so many unrelated problems. Then starter.

I bought it used (this is you Dan) for $500 in Mar 2009 with 97,000. I have 175,000 now and it is my daily driver (150 miles RT everyday). After reading all the post here, I worry most about the TRANSMISSION..............there is no way I will pay $2,000 for an overhaul ( I say that now).

Thanks again everyone...........jim in Sacramento, California USA

That's great Jim! I'm a young 53 and I still miss the Camaros I owned when I was single, no F-ing around with rear whell drive! My Tec (first one so far) is my 4th out of 5 Taurii, I can service a Vulcan with my eyes shut now, but it is a good motor to learn the Taurus on. Don't think I'll ever be able to step back down 55HP now.
